You can practice on your won without having to install Chef for DevOps practice.

Create AWS instances and add those as nodes on Chef server, Hosted chef allows up to 5 nodes for free.

Download starter kit from Hosted chef and install it on your desktop.

Now you can be able to create the first foot print on DevOps.
